Rumor: Microsoft Payoff = No PS3 Bioshock
This month's EGM brought some disheartening news for PS3 owners:
"By now you've probably heard of the 360 first-person underwater adventure game BioShock. or read about it. Or (If you're smart) finished it. But for the uninformed: Would you kindly go play it already? Thanks. Just don't expect to play it on the Playstation 3. See, my spies let slip that Microsoft handed publisher 2k a mammoth moneyhat to keep BioShock out of Sony's waters. And the extra content originally planned for the PS3 version? You just might see that on a potential Game of the Year edition for the 360."
Guess we'll have to settle for the PC version or pick up a 360.
Is anyone else disheartened about this practice? I plan on getting a 360 and all, but the fact that Microsoft is literally just shelling out money to keep exclusive rights on just about everything seems to be a little crappy to the gaming scene as a whole. I understand developers keeping software off of the PS3 due to the lower sales rates (compared to other current-gen consoles), but when a company with a hell of a lot of money starts paying off publishing companies for exclusives, is that really fair to the gaming scene? What do you think?
Here's a scan if you're interested. Click to zoom. It's two different shades because the paragraph started on one part of the page and went through to another.

It’s a fact of business life mate, Nintendo pioneered the practice and Sony showed it’s true power with Grand Theft Auto.
I agree it sucks, I would love to play GT Prologue on my 360 and MGS 4 but while we have separate platforms then this kind of thing will continue.
The only solution for the hardcore gamer is the same it’s always been: buy all the platforms..
September 29th, 2007 - 09:44
shinesevens, you’re an idiot. gran theft was on ps solely cause of ps having more fanbase and familiarity. ps doesnt pay for exclusive games nor content. and gt prologue isnt capable of being on xbox 360 due to its limitations in hardware and dvd9 disc.

More precisely, this is how the game industry will implode. Thanks in part to Microsoft’s payoff to keep games on their shoddy console that well exceed the sales targets for those games. By propping up developers it is misleading on the true sales and growth in the industry. Questionable to say the least. I for one will NEVER buy into the MS get-a-way-with-anything mentality that comes as a result of decades of corporate greed and illegal control over PC OEMs. Good riddance when they fail. Good riddance.

Microsoft and sony are competitors. Simply put. Bioshock is a popular game, and MS will do what they can to keep it off of the PS3, fair to gamers or not, its business.
September 29th, 2007 - 10:19
Fair and unfair is no question last gen Ps2 took a lot of exclusive on its side, the scene was such that there were very few games on PC. You have to get yourself a PS2 in last gen to play some major games. With xbox360 you can get the game in Pc too, but if PS3 gets the lead it would stop major titles to go anywhere out of PS3. Which would be definate monotony.
I suffered a lot being a PC gamer last gen and I can say PS3 deserves this treatment.
September 29th, 2007 - 10:38
GOOD! Sony deserves whatever they get. Remember Final Fantasy? When Sony stole them from Nintendo and paid them a nice heft sum to be exclusive to the PSX? Paybacks are a bitch Sony, your getting what you deserve. And NO I am not a fanboy, this is just a fact.
September 29th, 2007 - 10:55
Okay, first off no this is absolutely NOT good for the industry. It kills the competition, literally. giving the consumer a choice is always a great thing. Look at the declining quality of Madden games year by year. They don’t have to try because there is no competitor.
OH, and to the person that said Sony bought Final Fantasy from Nintendo back in PSX days, your sorely mistaken. You see Squaresoft and Nintendo got into legal issues over a character Square made for their SNES Mario RPG game. The character in question was Geno, Nintendo claimed ownership over all characters in that game because they were all developed with Mario mytho characters in mind. The only 100% original character was Geno, and Squaresoft wanted to use the character for their own games. When Nintendo said No, legal issues ensued and BAM, the two consoles seperated. Don’t believe me? look over the net and you find a 3d engine for FF7 (using characters from FF6) and it was listed as an N64 game!

What!!! How quickly we forget!
What do you mean what do I think?! Do you think taht Sony is good for the gaming landscape? Do you enjoy the playstation’s existance? Than this is no big deal. Because if it had not been for Sony throwing bushels of money at the likes of Eidos, Square, and Konami there would probably be no Sony. Sony’s strong-arm tactics in the last 3-console war (Nintendo,Sega,Sony) effectively put a wrench in Sega’s plans at staying a viable adversary in the war of consoles. Keepig games like MGS, Tomb Raider, and FF, exclusive to the PS1. I guess you don’t remember that! Now all of a sudden poor Sony is being picked on by someone it’s own size and you don’t like that do you? Deal with it! The shoes on the other foot now. So don’t talk to me about fairness!

And I think that not fair that they own bioshock keep them out from Sony that you know that not fair Hey 2K do you guys want to make more money then you have it, make it for Sony Ps3 and you guys will make more money! Big time thank again for read this

September 29th, 2007 - 13:20
American way, it seems.
That wouldn’t be so disgusting if they ever made any money in the console business. The way it is now, MS is the bully of the industry again. Andplays an unfair game. I’d rather see Google or Apple in games industry. Microsoft is just ruining it just like they ruin everything they touch.
Business is business, but keep it fair and have at least a bit of honor. How can some people justify MS’s way? They’re in this business for the sle purpose to bring the competition down and control another market. They’re not into making any profit, obviously. Disgusting beyond belief. And to see people actually agree with that; sad.
I just hope most of you are Americans. That would still keep my faith in the rest of the world, since Americans already have showed themselves as world-wide bullies.

i am a 360 owner, and i gotta say, its an alright system, no disapointment, enjoyed Double Agent, Gears of War was alright, might rent halo 3, currently playing Bioshock. I think what M$ is doing is bullshit, why the fuck are they paying off everyone? This deal will probably not do. Also this talk about paying for MGS4 and Final Fantasy series is retarded. If that happens, that would be fucked up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 30th, 2007 - 03:30
Hi kids, Final fantasy went to sony because square wants to put lots of cut scene which is not possible to do in-game rendering at that time, so they request large media storage (CD) , but kiddy nintendo still loves cartridge because they don’t have that technology —> sony did not buy
Grand theft auto was rejected by microsoft, then they go to sony –> sony did not buy
Same goes with MGS1 which was originally from nintendo…. it’s all about storage.
Paying for exclusivity thru huge sum of munny instead of technology in one full package called console and not additional hardware is not healthy for gaming world as we can’t see what the developer really wants.
I’m not saying 360 is inferior in term of graphics and processing power…but it lacks real hi-end HDMI (elite has old version of HDMI), large storage.. thus, good games in 360 will be getting shorter shorter gameplay in one disc if not, multiple discs –> you may pay more to get the same game or ruin the intense experience…
too bad huh?……
Sony never buys exclusivity in a direct way, but it listens to the developer ( back in the day of PS1 and PS2)…just like 360 listens to epic requirement for a higher VRAM….
bla bla…..
September 30th, 2007 - 11:20
I don’t understand why everyone is complaining. Sure, it may not be fair… sure, it may not be good for business. But why are gamers complaining? If you purchased a PS3, you knew what you were getting. I own a PS3 and I purchased it for the Blu-Ray and for the Sony exclusives. If you want to play BioShock, buy a 360 or upgrade your PC.
I get tired of the whining.
September 30th, 2007 - 13:04
I hope Microsoft doesn’t make a single penny of profit from their console business. I doubt they have even rocouped the US$4 billion of losses they incurred with the original Xbox and with the rampant red ring of death, the billions they have to spend on warranty and repairs. I hope they end up losing a few billion this time also.
The only thing they will gain is the people dumb enough to jump into their Xbox bandwagon in the first place. It’s the same people that bought the original Xbox, so they are not going anywhere. They will be stagnant as ever and end up with 30 million 360 owners at most. They have sold a miserable 11 million units in almost 2 years, you can’t expect them to beat Sony or Nintendo like that, let alone make any significant amount of profit. M$ is in this business solely to monopolise the gaming industry.
Once PS3 gets to an affordable pricepoint by next Spring or Fall, with all those big titles coming out, not to mention the impending victory of blu-ray, you’ll see the final death on 360’s coffin. Mark my words.
September 30th, 2007 - 15:24

September 30th, 2007 - 15:30
Buying a console from a monopoly is crime, Microsoft is trying to repeat the history, same thing happened with apple. They want to be the only console out there, they want to control again. That why they’re losing money more than they are gaining because they want to win this generation, and the next one, resulting Sony to cancel their gaming division and selling it to microsoft.
It will be one console for a hardcore gamer. Thusly, they can raise the prices whenever they want and vice versa.
September 30th, 2007 - 16:05
Keep the arguments sane and civil if possible! I didn’t start this post to incite a flame war – I think all of the consoles this gen are all pretty great – I just wanted to put the news out there. I’m a gamer in general, and although I do only own a PS3, I wouldn’t ever want to “pick a side” in the console wars. (Hopefully, in time, I’ll have both).

old news but funny news, exclusive? yeah lol
ok now what’s next? bigger and better mass effect for PS3?
