  • Back Surgery Freewrite

    layback.JPG

We have daily freewrites in my English class and I’ve decided I’m going to post the interesting ones so that any readers that are straggling around can learn a bit about the writer of this blog.

This particular freewrite focuses on my back surgery, which happened two years ago. The picture to the left is actually me. Click and zoom if you dare.

One of the most frightening moments of my life was before my back surgery. I sat with my girlfriend and my mom in a room while the doctor examined me once last time. Following that, I was stripped and put into a hospital gown.

I was given some sedatives, told to relax on a hospital gurney, and whisked off – away from my mom, my girlfriend, and from what I thought at the time, possibly my life. The hospital workers parked me in a dark room. A pre-op room. This is a bad idea. My own fears were compounded in this dark room by the four other patients awaiting surgery. Even though I was face down, I could tell that the patient in the area next to me was an old woman. She was crying. Crying and praying. Possibly one of the most disturbing combinations of things that one can ever hear. I wondered if I should be less concerned about myself and more concerned about her, but at the same time became more worked up about my own outcome.

The sedatives were clearly not doing their job. Despite whatever they had put into my system pumping through my blood, my heart felt like it was going to explode it was beating so fast. I went over every important person in my life, how they mattered to me. I thought about how my girlfriend would take it if I didn’t come out of the surgery. I almost cried thinking about that.

Finally, they started an IV drip. Carting me out, the lines of fluorescent lights lining the ceiling of the hallway on the way to the operating room rushing by. They asked me to count down from 10. I didn’t even get to one before I woke up. The surgery was over. What felt like less than a second was 14 hours later. I was asked to move my feet. I could do it! My girlfriend and mom came into the post -operation room. I could tell they were stressed as hell, but relieved that I got out of it. I fell asleep again pretty quickly because I was being pumped with a ton of drugs, but I remember that moment being one of the happiest of my life.

Not like I didn’t love my life before, but after going through a surgery that could potentially leave me paralyzed or dead, It’s hard to see anything negative. I mean, I’m alive. I’m still with the wonderful girlfriend that nursed me back to health during the three months that I could barely walk (we’re actually engaged now), I see my family all the time and maintain a close relationship with them, and I get to continue doing what I love (photography) – and I get paid to do it! I love my life. I love what my life is going to become. I don’t care about money or fame. I’m just happy with everything that I have.

Three years, one rib less, and one titanium rod more, that operation and the summer following still remain as a few of the most important points of my life. Is it weird that I consider a genetic condition that called for major and invasive surgery a good thing?

  • Random, tiny gripe.

I really hate when I’m trapped in a class with a rabidly sick person. There is a woman behind me right now, from what I remember a nursing student with the most disgusting, constant cough that I’ve heard in a long time. Now. As a nursing student, this woman should know that going to class when very sick just to avoid an absence is not only selfish, but dangerous to others. I had trouble breathing in that tiny box of a room because with every inhalation I was thinking about how much of her airborne snot particles I was taking in.

What makes it worse is right before class she said something about pneumonia while talking on the cell phone, followed by a comment about her diarrhea. Ew.

  • “Dark Knight” set explodes! Chicago Brach’s factory implosion.

I managed to get to the implosion and shoot some shots even through the confusing and quickly changing schedule thanks to HollywoodChicago.com and some tips from Cristin and Andrew.

We took the train straight to where we waited for the demolition to commence (for three hours no less – but it was worth it – the company was great!).

Although I didn’t get the best vantage point in the world, the experience was fun and the destruction of that building was far more intense than I had expected.

Here’s a sample (click for larger, of course):

  • Exclusive Photos! – “Gotham Hospital” set of the upcoming Batman film, “The Dark Knight”

Before I start this post, I’d like to give ridiculous credit to Adam Fendelman over at hollywoodchicago.com for the incredible sleuthing skills/great sources. Without it, I would have never been able to get out there and take some shots myself. Anyone interested can find the original scoop here: Source Also thanks to two of my bestest friends Cristin and Andrew for knowing about the Chicago filming in the first place.

    **POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
As a few Chicago residents and possibly the most hardcore of Batman fans know, an abandoned Brach’s factory in Chicago is being repurposed for the film “The Dark Knight” as Gotham Hospital. Well, according to a few sites, a demolition was rumored to be part of the film.

Wanting to confirm these rumors and possibly catch a few clear shots of the setup in the process, yours truly and a few friends set out to the movie set to check out exactly what was going on.

  • Just re-discovered my GrandCentral

Just rediscovered my GrandCentral phone number. Basically it’s a number you create on the net that connects all of the phones you own to one central system. Online answering machine, forwarding, screening, fun fun stuff.

So give me a call sometime. Just click on that button below here and dial away. You’ll connect to me free of charge!

  • The Other White Noise.

Well. I’m up at 8:00 AM. I was also still up at 6:00 AM. I was unaware that there would be 1,000 men upstairs pounding on the floors with hammers at the crack of dawn for some reason.

While I was searching for “white noise” on a torrent search engine (to muffle the army of hammer equipped soldiers) I found “The Other White Noise – Lesbians and Ice Cream”. Does anyone really download that stuff? (Apparently they do. 93 seeders, 121 leechers. Wtf.)

Edit: Turns out “Lesbians and Ice Cream” is an album. Not a dirty, dirty movie.

  • I built my own computer! Whooo!

Decided to upgrade my computer because I was running out of room due to my photos (and I just wanted to upgrade) so I got about $500 and bought all the parts to build my own computer. You can click on the links next to them if you feel like building your own pretty decent computer for under $600.

    Here are the stats:

    • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core Procesor 3000+ (soon to be overclocked to 2.6ghz) – $61.99 Link
    • Raidmax Smilodon Case with 500w power supply. – $90…but you can go a lot cheaper with another case.  Link
    • 2 gigs of ram – $80 Link
    • 320 GB hard drive – $75 Link
    • Samsung DVD RW 18x – $37 Link
    • ASUS motherboard – $100 Link
    • EVGA Geforce 8600 GT – $114 Link

    Total – $543 Yaaay.

So basically I got a formidable computer for  photo editing and gaming at a really decent price. I’m happy with it and I felt accomplished when I finally booted the thing up and it worked correctly. Here’s a shot of my new favorite toy:

  • Car Crash/Timelapse

Just a quick update because it’s ridiculously hot in this friggin car – some jerk hit me in a parking lot while I was watching on eating ice cream. I really hoped that the first time I got into a fender bender it’d be my fault…guess not. It sucks, my little car is dented. Here’s a quick shot of it before Elise dies.

  • Vacation update

I’m at a wireless access point down the beach and I’m running out of battery so I’ll make this quick. So far vacation has been pretty good, it’s warm, the ocean is nice, and the house is humongous. Plus of course Elise is here with me! Bad thing happened yesterday though. While bodyboarding I stepped on a friggin fishhook and the thing went through my foot. I don’t have time to type, so here are a few pictures.

I’ll update if I can get an internet connection but it’s difficult out here.

  • North Carolina trip Pt.1

Nothing much to write about other than the fact that I thought I was going to die in a crazy dust storm. Here are some shots that Elise, my wonderful assistant and lover took along the way with explanations from yours truly.

Leaving First, of course, the obligatory “hey we’re leaving” shot of us at something like 7:00 in the morning after a very short night of sleep. The morning was cool and pretty enjoyable so I was as awake as I ever was luckily.

Secondly, a random shot in Pennsylvania, which turned out to be the only state worthwhile on the way over. TheMountain mountains were beautiful and we got to drive through a ridiculously cool/frightening storm. Here’s a shot Elise took during a break in the rain when we were traveling above a valley or something.

She hates meThird, here’s a shot that confirms what I’ve been suspicious of since me and Elise first started going out – she wants me out of her life forever. Look at how I’m cut out! What is with that? After I saw this picture on her camera I cried the rest of the way to Virginia.

Finally, the dust devil thingie. This thing seriously looked like a forming tornado and I pretty much thought we were going to have to barrel through it or hope that it didn’t come toward us.I actually came to a complete stop on the highway before venturing into it. Elise took some video that I stripped the audio from to preserve my manliness as well as the ears of children who may be watching for some odd reason.
